USB Type-C Is Not a Speed: How to Specify USB Data Rate and Power Correctly

Two USB-C cables can use the same reversible connector and have very different capabilities. One may carry USB 2.0 data, another may support a higher USB data rate, and a third may add USB Power Delivery or display functions. The connector shape alone answers none of those questions.

USB-IF's current naming guidance separates three items that buyers should also keep separate in an RFQ: connector type, data performance and power capability.

1. Connector: what plugs in?

USB Type-C describes the physical connector. It does not automatically mean USB4, high-speed data, video support or a particular charging level. A USB 2.0 cable may legitimately use USB-C connectors while lacking the conductors required for USB 3.2 or USB4 signaling.

Specify both ends—for example, USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to USB-A, or a board-side internal connector to a front-panel USB-C receptacle.

2. Data: what rate is required?

USB-IF recommends consumer-facing performance names such as USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 40Gbps and USB 80Gbps. Avoid treating “USB-C” as a speed and avoid ambiguous shorthand when a performance-based name is available.

USB 80Gbps can also support an optional asymmetric configuration with up to 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps in the other. This is a capability of the USB4 specification and complete link; it does not mean every cable, host and device combination will operate in that mode.

Actual operation is limited by the lowest capability in the chain: host, device, cable, adapters and configuration.

3. Power: how much and under which protocol?

USB Power Delivery is a negotiated power system; it is separate from data speed. USB PD Revision 3.1 extends the specification to applications up to 240W over a suitable full-featured USB-C cable and connector, but the system must include compatible source, sink and cable components.

For a cable RFQ, state the required current, voltage or power profile, whether an electronically marked cable is required, and the exact source and device use case. Do not assume that a high data rate guarantees high charging power, or vice versa.

4. Video is another separate requirement

Video output depends on the host, device, cable construction and supported operating mode. A connector photograph cannot prove a resolution or refresh rate. Specify the target source, monitor, resolution, refresh rate and simultaneous data/power conditions, then define a validation setup.

Include:

  • connector at each end and orientation;
  • required USB data performance;
  • power requirement and charging protocol;
  • cable length and tolerance;
  • video or other mode, if needed;
  • active or passive construction requirement;
  • target host and device models;
  • jacket, shielding, color and overmold;
  • compliance documents and test evidence required;
  • quantity, packaging and labeling.

FAQ

Does every USB-C cable support USB4?

No. USB-C is the connector form. The cable may be designed for USB 2.0 or another data capability.

Does a 240W cable automatically charge every device at 240W?

No. Source, sink, cable and power negotiation must all support the requested level.

Does USB 80Gbps mean 120Gbps is always available?

No. 120/40Gbps is an optional asymmetric USB4 configuration and depends on the complete link.
